Apple introduces iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max with 5G

Apple announces its latest and best iPhones, the iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max with an updated design, larger display, and all four new models are the first Apple devices to offer support for 5G connectivity.

These phones offer an identical iPhone 4 design, the new squared-off design, which is quite different from the iPhone 12’s aluminum design. On the Pro and Pro Max is a stainless steel design.

iPhone 12 Pro models come in regular gray, stainless steel, gold, and this time around, there is a new blue to compliment the new series. Since the iPhone X bezel-less design in 2017, this is the first major redesign for Apple’s full-screen smartphones.

With larger displays on the PRO models, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the Apple’s crowned 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max are bigger than the previous iPhone 11 Pro with 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max.

However, the devices still come with 1,200 nits peak brightness, Super Retina XDR OLED displays, and it lacks a high refresh like other premium high-end smartphones, which might arrive next year and it is stuck with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

Apple is still living with the notch display since the iPhone X in 2017, which gives the iPhone 12 Pro models support for Face ID, and both devices also lack in-display fingerprint scanner.

The new larger displays on the PRO version arrives with slightly better and higher resolution than the iPhone 11 Pro models, where the iPhone 12 Pro comes with 1,170 x 2,532 px, and the Pro Max with up to 1,284 x 2,778 px.

In order to reduce the glass break when falling, Apple partnered with Corning to develop a Ceramic Shield material with 4x the drop resistance of the previous glass, which Apple says offers glass that’s tougher than any other smartphone display.

With the new Ceramic Shield technology, the new iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max offer four times better drop performance when it comes to preventing your phone from cracking when dropped.

These devices support water and dust resistance iP68 up to 6meters underwater for an hour, which is an upgrade from the last year’s generation that could only go down to 4 meters.

Identical to the previous iPhone 11 Pro models, Apple is bringing its iconic triple 12-megapixels rear cameras setup.
On the new iPhone 12 Pro is a faster f/1.6 12-megapixel wide lens with 27% improved low-light performance, 12-megapixel 52mm focal telephoto with 4x optical zoom range, with O1S support.

To complete the lineup, there is an f/2.4 12-megapixel ultrawide camera lens with a 120° field of view (13 mm focal length). All cameras support Night mode, except for the telephoto lens.

On that note, the iPhone 12 Pro Max still tops out with advanced camera features. It sports a new 12-megapixels telephoto with a 65mm focal length that can optically zoom in up to 2.5 times.

There is a new wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture and a new OIS system, it is 47% larger than the Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which combines with the lower aperture for 87% better low-light performance.

Apple also added some changes to image stabilization, which allows it to react faster, making 5,000 adjustments per second by using sensor shift instead of moving the optics lens to counteract movements.

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro phones are the first phones to record Dolby Vision video. It can shoot in HDR video with support for shooting directly in Dolby Vision HDR. You can record, edit, share the Dolby Vision HDR video straight from the Photos app.

Along with the updated camera features, Apple touts of a new feature called “Apple ProRAW” that will offer existing computational photography benefits like its Deep Fusion and Smart HDR along with the flexibility of RAW photos.

The company said that the format will be available across all four cameras and will let users adjust things like sharpening, color highlights, and more while still taking advantage of Apple’s existing photography enhancements.

The ProRAW feature can be able to record all the data you expect from a RAW format while also saving the image processing decisions that the phone made on the spot, making quick touch-ups faster as you have a solid base to work from. It will be available on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max later this year.

Available on the iPhone 12 Pro models is the iPad Pro’s LIDAR sensor, which will be used for additional AR effects. The company explained that the LIDAR scanner supports Night Mode portrait photography shots, it can be used to help focus in low-light situations, and making autofocus for low-light photography up to six times faster.

iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are powered by Apple A14 Bionic chip, offering a six-core CPU and a four-core GPU, which Apple says are the fastest ever and claims it is up to 50 percent faster than any other phone.

The new A14 Bionic chip is the company’s first to use a 5nm process, which is a massive upgrade from the A13 Bionic 7nm process. During the announcement, VP Greg Joswiak said it was the “most powerful chip ever made” by Apple.

It was first introduced on the refreshed iPad Air last month, and it offers 11.8 billion transistors and 40% more than the A13 Bionic chip. Machine learning has seen a 70% increase in performance as well to handle the ever-growing applications of AI.

Apple has doubled the base storage to 128GB, with 256GB and 512GB upgrade options. The 5G support is the company’s biggest addition this year, offering both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G, which will work with all the various types of 5G networks from all three major US carriers.

During the online launch, the company says that it offers “the most 5G bands of any smartphone” promising that it’ll support a wide array of cellular carriers around the world and their various 5G standards. And when you don’t need the extra speed, the Smart Data mode switches to 4G automatically to preserve the battery.

Speaking of battery, the Pro comes with 17 hours and 20 hours of video playback on the Pro Max. To make it more interesting, Apple removed USB wall bricks and wired EarPod headphones from the box, as you will be getting only a USB-C to Lightning cable that lets you connect the iPhone to your MacBook for charging.

With this move, it is part of Apple’s ongoing environmental goals, to reduce carbon emissions, a step on its path to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. It is a change that mirrors the company’s move in removing wall bricks from its Apple Watch smartwatches earlier this year.

Apple’s four new iPhones will be compatible with Apple’s new MagSafe wireless chargers and accessories, which offer magnetically attached cases, charging pads, and even attachments like wallets. It is used for wireless charging and it delivers 15W of power, there is faster wired charging support up to 20W.

The iPhone 12 Pro will starts at $999, with preorders beginning from Friday, October 16th, and will ship from October 23rd. While the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1,099, with preorders to commence from November 6th and ship on November 13th.
