Apple officially launches the company’s latest iPhone generation – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. You might have been looking for the iPhone 14 mini like the previous series but Apple discontinued the mini variant.

Alongside the iPhone lineup, Apple also unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra, which is a successor to last year’s Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 8. These devices bring better features and more brilliant specifications than their predecessors.

The iPhone 14 is the direct successor to the last year’s iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 Plus lacks one. Both are powered by last year’s A15 Bionic chipset, they bring a decent camera upgrade with bigger sensors, and come with a 60Hz refresh rate.
The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus come in Midnight, Purple, Starlight, Blue, and (PRODUCT) RED colors. The iPhone 14 measures 7.80mm and weighs 172g, while the Plus option is thick at 7.80mm and weighs 203g.
Camera-wise, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus sport dual 12-megapixels as the primary and secondary sensors, the main lens is a large 12-megapixels wide-angle camera sensor and a larger f/1.5 pixels, 7P lens, and a new front TrueDepth camera.
There’s the 12-megapixels Ultra Wide camera with f/2.4 to capture more of a scene, a 5P lens, and a Photonic Engine that improves mid- to low-light performance for photos across all cameras: up to 2x on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and 2.5x on the new Main camera, says Apple.
The company also mentioned that the True Tone flash is 10% brighter and has better uniformity for more consistent lighting compared to the predecessor. It packs support for Sensor-shift optical image stabilization for video, and 100% Focus Pixels.
All packed up for the camera includes HDR video recording with Dolby Vision at 4K 60 fps, Slo‑mo 1080p at 240fps, and Cinematic mode up to 4K HDR at 30 fps. The TrueDepth camera is a specification for FaceID facial recognition.
Apple also added a new camera feature, it’s called Action mode. It allows you to shoot an incredibly smooth-looking video that adjusts to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when the video is being captured in the middle of the action.
On the front is top-notch which houses a 12-megapixels ƒ/1.9 TrueDepth front camera, and Autofocus with Focus Pixels. There’s the
Retina Flash, HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 fps, and Slo‑mo 1080p at 120fps.
The iPhone 14 sports a 6.1-inch 460ppi Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 14 Plus packs a 6.7-inch 458ppi 800 nits brightness, up to 1200 nits brightness, HDR, True Tone, Ceramic Shield protection, and still relies on the traditional 60Hz refresh rate.
Both devices are powered by a six-Core A15 Bionic 5nm chip with 64-bit architecture, 4‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine with iOS 16 running on the software and are available in three storage options – 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
Fortunately, Apple doesn’t want you to pay a higher amount to enjoy good battery life, the company ensured that among the iPhone 14 series, including the iPhone 14 Pro model, the iPhone 14 Plus has the best battery of an iPhone ever.
Both iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus feature a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 15W MagSafe wireless charging, and bring fast charging support. Apple upgraded the 19 hours on the older iPhone 13, up to 20 hours on the iPhone 14, and up to 26 hours of video on the iPhone 14 Plus.
The extra size also allowed Apple to improve the cooling system to deliver better performance.
Connectivity – Crash Detection, Satellite Service, and eSIM-only iPhones
The mobile phones arrive with 5G (sub‑6 GHz) connectivity, 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.3, Ultra Wideband chip for spatial awareness, and NFC with reader mode. Those are just the tips of the connectivity features.
During the launch event, Apple introduces a new feature – satellites. and eSIM-only iPhones. Although eSIM-only iPhones apply only to the US for now, but the company boasted the ability to quickly swap between multiple eSIMs and add carriers without visiting one of their offices. Dual eSIM is supported.
The new satellite messaging service is literally text-only and will be used mostly for emergencies, but it does support two-way communication so you will be notified when rescue is on the way. The Find My app will also be able to share your location with friends so that they can keep an eye on you.
The satellite service will launch in November for users in the US and Canada and iPhone 14 buyers get a free 2-year subscription. It sends composed custom messages automatically, a detailed SOS in just a few taps which will explain your situation at a time.
Well, speed is the goal and Apple allows you to easily composed custom messages and saves it for an unfortunate event. When there are locations with a clear view of the sky a message can be transmitted in about 15 seconds, but if there are trees overhead it may take a couple of minutes.
The crash detection is available on the iPhone 14 duo too, thanks to a new accelerometer that can detect up to 256G. It comes with a new high dynamic range gyroscope, and can now detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone.
In the US, you can start ordering for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus from September 9 (Friday). The iPhone 14 costs $800 and will be available on September 16 while the iPhone 14 Plus goes at $900 and will be available a few weeks later on October 7 through Apple Authorized Resellers.
