Facebook rebrands as Metaverse – Oculus rebranded to Reality Labs

Same interface, same name, same goal but with different, new upcoming agendas, one of the biggest social media with over 2billion users, Facebook rebrands to Meta. Something that may serve as its definite solution to its problems, after weeks of full-on reports and rumors.

Announced through the company’s Connect event, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said “We are a company that builds technology to connect… “Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”

The Facebook CEO mentioned that Meta will be like a “general name” Meta is now the name of the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. On that note, the Oculus brand will also be rebranded to Reality Labs.

Ultimately, this is a big change for Facebook as Mark added “To reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” However, some changes have begun, like now redirects to a welcome page on Facebook and @meta on Twitter with protected tweets belongs to Mark too.

The big reason for the change of name is that the company’s change in direction from being a collection of social media apps to a collection of apps and technologies that form a ‘metaverse’. Mark said the name Facebook doesn’t fully encompass everything the company does now.

Mark also added that “Starting with our results for the fourth quarter of 2021, we plan to report on two operating segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs”. Zuckerberg says within a few years, people will stop seeing Facebook as a social media but a metaverse.

Facebook CEO also said that “We also intend to start trading under the new stock ticker we have reserved, MVRS, on December 1. Today’s announcement does not affect how we use or share data.”

Facebook CEO, Mark also mentioned that Meta will focus on building a metaverse that will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences. Where users will not only get a visual experience but also get the feeling of being in it.

They plan to achieve this by using a combination of apps and technologies, such as VR, AR, and Smart Glasses. Mark wants the name Meta (no -verse) to completely rectify the company’s new policy, products, and much other upcoming activity too.
