Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold launched with 8.01-inch OLED foldable display

    Chinese Smartphone maker, Xiaomi announces its next foldable display, Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold with an 8.01-inch QHD+ OLED foldable display, and an external 6.52-inch 90Hz AMOLED display with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC powering the device.

    The Mi MIX Fold brings back the highly advanced Mi Mix series, and this time around, it comes with its own astonishing impressive perks, offering more revolutionary and futuristic specifications and features.

    Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold was announced during the second day of its launch event. The major features of the device are quite intriguing, let start with the cameras, to make it better, Xiaomi invested CNY 140 million in R&D and was in development for two years.

    The main camera lens is a 108-megapixels sensor with a lack of OIS, the 1/1.52” ISOCELL HM2 sits behind a 7P lens. The sensor supports 9-in-1 binning for 2.1 µm pixels.

    In addition, there is the 13-megapixels ultrawide-angle camera with a 123º field of view, 1.12 µm pixels with an f/2.4 lens. The telephoto camera comes with the world’s first Liquid Lens technology.

    Why is it called so? It made out of a flexible film filled with transparent liquid, with the help of a precision moto, it can change its shape, which just likes the lens in the human eye.

    The company noted that the liquid can function in extreme temperatures ranging from -40ºC to 60ºC (-40ºF to 140ºF). It supports 3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm.

    Xiaomi developed the Surge C1 image processing chip, which helps runs the 3A algorithms in a power-efficient manner – Auto Focus, Auto Exposure, and Auto White Balance. There is a 20-megapixels front-facing camera.

    Back to the display, the Mi MIX Fold sports two displays – a large tablet-sized 8.01” OLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 1440p+ resolution, and 60Hz refresh rate.

    Even tho Huawei might disagree with this, but Xiaomi claims the 8.01” is the largest display on a foldable smartphone. It comes with a simple three-finger swipe, which is to show how big it is.

    In addition to the large display claims, the company enabled a desktop mode with multiple resizable windows. It also supports a 120Hz touch sampling rate, HDR10+ certified, rated at 600nits with 900nits peak brightness, and MEMC.

    The display arrives with Dolby Vision and offers great color accuracy (DCI-P3 color space). The company tested the device through 200,000 bends during reliability testing then pushed further to 1 million bends.

    Xiaomi developed a U-shaped hinge that is 27% lighter than the hinges used by other foldable. There is a 6.5-inch AMOLED external display with 840 x 2,520-pixel resolution, rated 650nits with 900nits peak brightness.

    Also comes with Dolby Vision, HDR10+ certified, 27:9 wide aspect ratio supports 90Hz refresh rate with 180Hz touch sampling rate, and sports an impressive color calibration also.

    Design

    The Mi MIX Fold is available in ceramic texture and a Ceramic Special Edition with a gold middle frame and volume buttons. There is a black ceramic back panel also with special laser engraving.

    Protecting the Standard edition is the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. These come with a quad speakers setup with dual 1216 speakers positioned on either side of the screen and a large 0.65mm amplitude and 1.34cc-equivalent sound cavity.

    It also comes with support for 15V Smart PA and SOUND BY Harman Kardon. Allowing the device to realize 3D spatial audio field playback, which builds an additional sound dimension on top of the foundational dual speakers, creating a true 3D spatial audio listening experience.

    Battery and Processor

    Powering the Mi MIX Fold up is Qualcomm’s latest high-end chipset, Snapdragon 888 5nm Mobile Platform with 5G SA/NSA modem, Adreno 660 GPU, 3,200 MHz LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.1 storage.

    It is available in 12GB RAM with 256GB storage, 12GB / 16GB RAM with 512GB (Ultra) storage. The Mi MIX Fold runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 11 OS out of the box and comes with Dual SIM support, for nano + nano.

    Xiaomi embedded a butterfly-type cooling system for high-performance rates, which integrates large-area VC liquid cooling, thermal gel, multilayer graphite sheets, and other heat dissipation methods for 22,583.7mm² total heat dissipation area.

    The cooling systems to remove heats from the 5G antennas and the fast charging system also. It comes with support for side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6E 802.11 ax 8 x / MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and GPS (L1 + L5).

    Talking about fast charging, it sports a 5,020mAh battery, split into two 2,460mAh cells with 67W wired charging support, which completes a full charge in 37 minutes through USB Type-C and lacks the wireless capability.

    For pricing and availability, the Mi MIX Fold 12GB + 256GB model costs 9,999 yuan ($1,521), while the 12GB + 512GB glass back version will go for 10,999 yuan ($1,673).

    The top-end version 16GB + 512GB Ceramic Special Edition goes for 12,999 yuan ($1,977). The Mi MIX Fold will be available to order and will go on sale in China from the 16th of April.
